Café Altar: The essence of Tolima in every sip

Welcome to Café Altar, an exclusive selection of coffees born in the heart of northern Tolima. Our coffee is cultivated and roasted with dedication by the expert hands of Asouribe, an association committed to bringing you the highest quality in every bean. Each cup of Café Altar is an invitation to discover the authentic flavor of the Colombian mountains.

Deep roots in northern Tolima

Café Altar is the result of a union of small producers from the Asouribe association, an organization based in northern Tolima, Colombia, dedicated to cultivating coffee that reflects the richness of its origins. Here, each bean is carefully selected and roasted to preserve the authentic flavor that characterizes the region. Café Altar’s mission is simple but powerful: to offer a coffee of exceptional quality that honors the work and spirit of our coffee growers, while connecting everyone who tastes it with our roots.

We offer Café Altar in two forms that maintain its unmatched quality: roasted beans and ground coffee. Whether you prefer to grind your own coffee or enjoy the convenience of pre-ground coffee, each form features a precise roast and a balanced flavor profile that honors our commitment to quality.

From the mountains of Villahrmosa, Tolima, to your cup

At Café Altar, every step of the production process is carried out with dedication and precision. The beans are harvested manually to ensure that only coffee at its peak ripeness reaches your cup. The beans are then sophisticatedly roasted to capture the distinctive notes of Tolima coffee. We work in harmony with nature and respect the traditional knowledge of our land, so you can enjoy a cup that represents the best of our region.

Selective Harvesting: Manual harvesting allows us to select only the beans at their perfect ripeness.

Artisanal Roasting: “Each batch is precisely roasted to achieve a flavor profile that highlights the character of Tolima.”

High-Quality Packaging: Our packaging is designed to preserve the freshness and aroma of each bean.

Our mission, our values

At Café Altar, we are guided by a clear mission: to offer coffee of exceptional quality that represents the work and dedication of our communities in northern Tolima, while preserving the environment and supporting the development of our producers. Each Café Altar bean symbolizes our dedication to responsible practices, respect for the land, and authenticity in every process. We want our customers to enjoy a coffee that stands out not only for its flavor, but also for its positive impact on those who grow it and the world we share.

How coffee arrived in Colombia:

It all began centuries ago in Africa, in Ethiopia, where coffee was initially consumed in infusions or by chewing its leaves. However, it was the Arabs who were responsible for its expansion, first throughout the Arab world, reaching Turkey in 1554. In the 17th century, it entered Europe through the port of Venice and spread across the continent, finally reaching America in the 18th century. Responsible for this expansion to new continents were the Dutch, who no longer wanted to depend on the Arabs. Thus, by the early 18th century, the Netherlands led the world in coffee production.
One theory about how coffee arrived in Latin America is that it was the Dutch who introduced it through what is now Suriname, and then the French brought it to Colombia and Brazil in the early 18th century. By the 19th century, it had become a very important crop, which was also influenced by the fact that coffee rust attacked the crops in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, which at that time was the main coffee producer, in the middle of that century.
